HERE IS WHAT THEY ARE SAYING... AND THE FACTS

Let's address what others are saying about the Friends of the Thomaston Green, and let's get the facts on the table.

The Thomaston Town officials have created a website that purportedly presents facts about the Green. This site is little more that a thinly veiled attempt to sell their position.

1. They say "The Green Is NOT in danger" and "There are NO immediate development plans for the Thomaston Green." Then 9 lines below on their site they say "A Community Health Center for All! Coming Soon!"

Which is it? Are there no immediate development plans or are they planning to build a health center there?

2. Their website says:

"Who decides what happens on the Green? The Selectboard or the Thomaston Voters?

• Thomaston Voters. All proposals and projects designated for the Thomaston Green will be voted on by you, the citizens of Thomaston, not just the selectboard. Thomaston Voters will always decide what happens on any portion of the Thomaston Green."

This is ambiguous and potentially dubious. Article 3 states "Shall the Town of Thomaston vote to allow the Town to determine..." There are many opinions that suggest that this language is unclear and potentially sets the selectboard as the deciding body. From ambiguity comes legal challenge. This is seen in the courts every day.

3. Their website says:

"Why do the signs say ‘Save the Green’? What are we saving it from?

• The Thomaston Green is NOT in Danger. Article 4, publicized as “Save the Green,” is fear mongering. There are no immediate development plans for the Thomaston Green."

Their own website says "A Community Health Center for All! Coming Soon!" Are there development plans or not? And, this is not "fear mongering", this is offering the people of Thomaston a choice.

4. Their website says:

"Why do the signs say ‘Save the Green’? What are we saving it from?

• Saving your control of the Thomaston Green is only possible by voting no on Article 4 and by supporting Article 3."

This is simply NOT true. Nowhere in Article 4 is it stated that the people of the Town will not be able to decide what happens to the Green if it is preserved. The people of the Town will have complete latitude to decide what features are added to the space.

5. Their website says:

"Why do the signs say ‘Save the Green’? What are we saving it from?

• By passing Article 3, more than half of the 15 acres of the land will be preserved as public recreational park forever. The other half of the 15 acres would remain developable for any community service or business activity, all under local control by citizens."

Yet again, this is simply not true. If you read the language of article 3, the decision of what happens to the entire 15.6 acre would be let to the "Town". And, the entire 15.6 acres would be "permanently restricted to a public park". This includes the parcel that is currently preserved. Article 3 would make the entire 15.6 subject to development.

6. The postcard that they sent out says:

"More than 7 acres will always remain open park space for the community and recreational uses" (if article 3 passes)

How can this be? Article 3 says "...the 15.6- acre parcel of land known as the Thomaston Green and to prevent this land from being permanently restricted to a public park" This means that the 7 acres CANNOT be a park.
